Blyss Running Champion ~ Meet Rachel

This is the best part of my job, hands down! Meeting you and getting to share your stories is so inspiring to me. I hope you all are enjoying these monthly posts as much as I am!

I met Rachel at the Flying Pig Race Expo this past spring. She lives in Ohio and has been a Police Officer for the city of Cincinnati for almost 20 years. She has two children ages 11 & 13.  When she's not exercising, she enjoys going to Reds games with her husband and spending time with their dogs!  Her kids have started to join in on some short mud runs with her which has been a fun adventure for the family!

 She has the Blyss Skirt in Batik and the Trail Skirt in Paisley and loves them both, but the Trail Skirt is her favorite because the black and white goes with everything! She's looking forward to buying a few more skirts and the Skirting Around Capri for when the weather turns cooler!!!

Meet Rachel......

When and why did you start running? What’s your story?

I started running over 20 years ago when I was in college.  In my 20's, I ran two marathons, but only ran sporadically for the next 20 years.  In the last few years, I started running more, but it was always a chore - something I did for the health benefits but not something I enjoyed.  It was more like a necessary evil that I did on the treadmill in the gym.  I rarely ventured outside unless I was running a race.  At the beginning of this year, I joined a Facebook group of teams of people to run the year - 2017 miles total for the group.  I chose 600 miles as my goal.  I felt like it was doable, but would be a stretch for me.  As a result, I started running more frequently and started to actually like running!!  I signed up for a 20K trail run and fell in love with trail running - something completely new for me.  Now I look forward to getting out on a trail!

 

Favorite distance? And /or favorite race you have run?

 My favorite distance is 10K.  It is long enough that I feel like I have accomplished something, but short enough that if I don't feel like I have trained enough, I know I can still do it!  I've recently signed up for several 10K's while I am out of town with my husband.

 

If you could go on a run anywhere, where would it be? Your ideal run?

About 10 years ago, I visited Tucson.  Now that I have started running more and started trail running, I would love to go back there and run some of the trails in Sabino Canyon and other local parks.

 Favorite pre or post run food?

If I run as soon as I wake up, I prefer to run on an empty stomach.  If I do eat before a run, I like to have some oatmeal and I have to wait at least an hour before I start my run.

 

Do you cross train

In addition to running, I lift weights several days a week and usually attend at least one "bootcamp" style class each week.

 

Do you use a GPS or track your mileage and if so, which one?

I just started tracking my mileage this year and currently use the ASICS app for the iPhone. I run with my Apple Watch but am considering purchasing a Garmin.

 

What have you learned/gained through running?

The biggest thing I have learned is that I can set a goal and achieve it.  I set my goal for 600 miles this year but questioned whether I would actually be able to achieve it.  Today I reached 300 miles, a whole month ahead of the schedule that I set for myself.  

 

Your next running goal?

My next goal is to run the Flying Pig Skyline Challenge with Extra Cheese.  That includes the Little King's Mile the Friday night of race weekend, a 10K followed by a 5K on Saturday and the half-marathon on Sunday.  This year I ran the mile, 10K & 5K.
