Alyson's Story

"My hope for Blyss Running is that it can offer function, comfort, support and inspiration to all the women out there who are setting and reaching their impossible goals."

My name is Alyson and I am the founder of Blyss Running. I came to running later in life, at age 41. My whole life prior to this I believed that I could not run. Honestly, I believed that my body type was just one that wasn’t physically made for running. I was that girl in high school that begged her mom to write her an excuse to get out of running the mile in gym class.

One morning in 2010 when dropping my daughter off at preschool, a group of other moms said, 'we’re starting a Couch to 5K program, join us?' To which I replied something along the lines of, 'I've never been able to run. I can't run.'

But…..I did join them and (to my amazement!) ran a turkey trot 5K two months later. I could not believe I could run 3.1 miles without stopping, but I did! We decided to run a 10K together two months later. Then we all trained and ran a half marathon that next summer. I went on to run all sorts of races…. running got a hold of me. I discovered my love for trail running. I celebrated my 44th birthday by running a marathon. All along my running journey I kept proving myself wrong by setting and reaching goals that I thought were impossible. Running taught me that anything was possible.

Running also taught me that the athletic wear industry had no clue about what a woman needs and wants from her running apparel. I didn't understand why there were no pockets anywhere.... or why shorts and skirts weren't made a bit longer so you didn't get the very painful thigh chaffing....or why shorts constantly rode up and didn't stay put.  I'd see women wearing capri running pants in the high heat of summer and knew the only reason they were wearing them was the same reason I was, because they could not find a short that met their needs.

I often dreamt of making myself a pair of shorts that were longer and had pockets. How hard could it be? My husband's cancer diagnosis in 2014 gave me the kick in the butt to make that dream a reality. I went on to make numerous prototypes, took a business class, learned a lot about the manufacturing process and met a lot of wonderful supportive people.
Turns out all body types are the running type. My hope for Blyss Running is that it can offer function, comfort, support and inspiration to all the women out there who are setting and reaching their impossible goals. Running is very empowering especially when you don’t have to worry about the functionality of your running attire.
