"If anyone would have said to me that one day I’d be designing and selling running clothes, I would have looked at them like they were crazy."
Running?? I’d never been very athletic and running was about as far out of my comfort zone as I could get. I thought I couldn’t do it. It was too hard. Other people told me it was too hard and wasn't for me. I didn’t have a runner’s body type. I never gave it a chance.....
My degree is in fashion merchandising and my early adult years were spent working in retail management and merchandising. Once I started having children, I chose to stay at home for a bit. My dream was to own a clothing boutique, but life had other plans and I wound up in the home décor business for 5 years. As that business was coming to an end, I thought maybe it was time to resume the stay at home mom role.
Enter running. I was coerced into it. Dropping my daughter off at preschool one morning a group of other moms said, “hey, we’re starting a couch to 5K program, join us?” To which I replied something along the lines of, 'I've never been able to run. I can't run.'
But…..I did join them and (to my amazement!) ran a turkey trot 5K two months later at age 41. I could not believe I could run 3.1 miles without stopping, but I did! We decided to run a 10K together two months later. Then we all trained and ran a half marathon that next summer. I went on to run all sorts of races…. running got a hold of me. I discovered my love for trail running. I celebrated my 44th birthday by running a marathon.
Then in the spring of 2015, a friend suggested that I design a pair of shorts for her and I because we were so frustrated trying to find a pair that met our needs. Why not, I thought! I was fed up with not being able to find shorts that had an inseam long enough to prevent chaffing…..that were comfortable and not ‘all up everywhere’ they should not be after running a few miles…..that had pockets for my stuff!
So, for the next year I made numerous prototypes, took a business class, learned a lot about the manufacturing process and met a lot of wonderful supportive people. Blyss Running came into being and now I’ve come full circle, doing something that marries my experience in design and merchandising with my love of running. Running was always in my blood, I just needed to be coerced a little.
